    Description
This course surveys the literatures of early America from the beginnings to 1865. It examines writing as a device to reflect and create a rapidly changing world, including colonial expansion and enslavement. Readings from a wide variety of texts and discussion highlight the multicultural and multilingual nature of early American literatures and societies. Whenever possible, texts are read in their entirety. English 385
