In this course, students receive instruction in critical thinking for purposes of constructing, evaluating, and composing arguments in a variety of rhetorical forms, using primarily non-fiction texts, refining writing skills and research strategies developed in ENGL C1000 Academic Reading and Writing (C-ID ENGL 100) or similar first-year college writing course. Students examine methods by which people are persuaded to think, believe, and/or act by exploring the relationship between language and logic. Students also identify cognitive biases and common fallacies of language and thought in order to craft traditional and/or multimodal arguments in context of current social, economic, political, and environmental discourse. This course includes writing a minimum of 5,000 words. This course was formerly known as ENGWR 302 and is not open to students who have successfully completed ENGWR 302, ENGWR 482, or ENGL C1001H.
