It covers the writing of various kinds of essays, such as memoir, autobiography, personal essays, reflective nature writing, prose with poetic elements (prose-poetry), and fact-based or philosophical writing with a definite literary, stylistic component. Course readings include one full-length work of creative non-fiction. Topics in this course also include analysis of classical and modern essays for elements such as voice, point of view, and structure. Additional topics will include the relationship between cultural events and literary conventions and an awareness of literature's role in culture, emphasizing diverse experiences and perspectives.
