- Apprentice. This course expands on CARPT 246 and the Pile Driver Apprentice's knowledge of the appropriate safety procedures when using Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and oxy-fuel cutting and the associated components. This course focuses on welding vertical groove joints (3G). It also covers American Welding Society (AWS) requirements for achieving a welder certification in 3G with SMAW.
