The roles of rituals, taboos, and belief systems are reviewed. It includes a basic anthropological approach to the search for and explanation of human universals and variations. Comparing the habits of apes and monkeys, as well as the fossil record, this course addresses the evolution of the modern human body. Shifts in social and environmental conditions, as well as the impact of innovations in methods of preparation over time and in radically diverse communities are analyzed.
