Students will explore California’s diversity; students will understand and will think critically about their own ideas, beliefs, and assumptions; and students will examine a variety of literary forms (including novels, short stories, letters, poems, plays, and narratives) as representative of California’s history and literature. Topics may include literary movements, conventions of genres, and literary elements such as plot, characterization, theme, and setting. The course is designed to sharpen students’ reading, writing, and critical thinking skills with special attention to close reading (analysis and criticism).
