Students will complete a minimum of 500 hours of direct patient care in field settings, applying advanced assessment, clinical reasoning, and prehospital interventions in dynamic environments. In addition to the 500-hour requirement, students must serve as a team leader for a minimum of 50 patient encounters in alignment with program guidelines, ensuring competency in leading patient care scenarios under the supervision of a preceptor. Definition of a Team Lead: "The team leader is the individual who organizes, directs, and manages all aspects of the patient’s field care from initial contact through transfer of care. This includes leading patient assessment, determining and implementing treatment, delegating responsibilities, making transport decisions, and coordinating communication with medical direction and receiving facilities." Field shifts are scheduled in 24- to 48-hour increments to simulate real EMS operations. Additionally, students will meet biweekly for three-hour Grand Rounds sessions to present field case reviews, engage in structured debriefings, and refine their clinical decision-making. This course builds upon previous knowledge and skills learned in EMSP 323, EMSP 324, EMSP 333, EMSP 334, EMSP 343, EMS 309, EMS 310, EMS 321, EMS 322 and EMSPxxx preparing students for independent field practice and paramedic certification testing. This course aligns with the DOT NHTSA National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards (2021), California Code of Regulations, Title 22, and Santa Barbara County LEMSA Protocols. This is a 12 week course.
